Creative City: Hong Kong’s only design & culture-focused guide-map offers a new way to explore the city
An eloquently designed, and uniquely tailored guide-map, Creative City provides an indispensable and thoroughly insightful view of Hong Kong’s best places to ‘stash, see and savour’. Inspired from a first-person perspective of the local creative community, the ‘map with a twist’ is ideal for locals and tourists alike.
Conceived and developed by prominent creative entrepreneurs Danielle Huthart of Whitespace and Lancashire Road's Louise Wong, Creative City celebrates Hong Kong's cultural heart and is flush with industry insider information. With visually striking infographics, colour-coded maps highlighting Nike Free Run Dame must-see districts, and a full spread feature on the best cafes in which to hone creativity over a cup of coffee, the second edition of Creative City is an essential pocket companion to discover both the traditional and emerging culture of Hong Kong.
The link between coffee and creativity is honoured in this edition: “Why coffee? The coffee scene has really taken off since our first edition, in a way that's unlike before," said Danielle Huthart. "There's a link between creativity and coffee, or at least the culture of socialising and discussing ideas. It's a trend we welcome and hope will continue."
For those who seek to immerse themselves in cultural epicentres or simply prefer to take the path less travelled, Hong Kong’s creative side is now easy to explore thanks to Creative City. The second installment of Hong Kong’s indigenously conceived arts and culture guide-map, which hits book shelves this month, is published by two of Hong Kong’s top creative minds, and expands upon their critically acclaimed inaugural edition released in 2011.
Large maps of the must-see districts around both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, are colour-coded and numbered with street-level detail. Amongst the highlighted feature destinations are galleries, markets, boutiques, restaurants, architectural gems and cafe hideouts where many a creative can be spotted hatching a plan. For this edition's six district maps, Creative City collaborated with Hong Kong-based design collectives including Graphic Airlines, Shanghai Street Studios, Savannah College of Art and Design as well as Daydream Nation.
"The idea of the 'district curators' is to share an intimate look at the surroundings from people España camiseta most familiar with the areas," said Louise Wong. "There are 188,000 creative practitioners living and working in Hong Kong and what inspires them may be surprising and sometimes, unexpected."
"We are not trying to provide a comprehensive guide to every secret location in the city but we hope that people feel encouraged and excited to explore and experience Hong Kong in their own way," said Louise Wong.
This second design-led edition is curated by local artisans and presented in one of four limited edition sleeves by Hong Kong resident artists. Graphic Airlines, Don Mak, French illustrator Emilie Sarnel and American artist Emily Eldridge, offer their visuals that highlight the diversity of Hong Kong’s creatives. Each sleeve draws inspiration from the city, depicting it in whimsical, colourful and sometimes political ways.
